physical therapy
The idea that physical therapy assistants are considered as qualified as physical therapists in the delivery of manual physical therapy to seniors is a misconception. Physical therapists are more qualified than physical therapy assistants in certain aspects of physical therapy, particularly when dealing with the complexities often associated with senior patients. We call this JeanneCare.
Physical therapy assistants are not considered as qualified as physical therapists in all aspects, particularly when it comes to the initial evaluation, complex procedures, and independent clinical decision-making that is vital for optimal patient outcomes, especially for seniors.
Why Physical Therapists Are More Qualified
Here’s why PT’s are more qualified than PTA’s in certain aspects of manual physical therapy, particularly when dealing with the complexities often associated with senior patients:
Education and Expertise
PT’s hold a higher degree of education and training compared to PTAs. They are primarily focused on diagnosing patients and creating individualized treatment plans based on a patient’s prognosis. PTAs, on the other hand, focus on implementing these treatment plans and administering the manual therapy techniques prescribed by the PT.
Initial Evaluation and Plan of Care
PT’s are the only ones qualified to perform the initial evaluation of a patient and develop the plan of care. This crucial step involves a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s condition, which is particularly important for seniors who may have multiple health conditions or comorbidities.
Complex Procedures
Certain complex, manual therapy procedures, such as spinal and peripheral joint mobilization/manipulation and sharp selective debridement, are considered to be exclusively performed by PT’s. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) holds a strong position against PTAs performing joint mobilizations, emphasizing the need for the extensive foundational knowledge, manual skill, and complex monitoring that only a PT is educated to provide.
Legal Responsibility
The physical therapist is legally responsible for all services provided under their supervision, including those performed by PTAs.
